Betty TK8 stool in oak and natural webbing by Thau & Kallio for &Tradition

Dezeen Showroom: Scandinavian design duo Thau & Kallio has expanded its Betty seating collection for &tradition to include a bar and a counter stool informed by the construction of Copenhagen’s 1857 Betty Nansen Theatre.

The low Betty TK7 stool and its taller counterpart the TK8, feature the same sturdy construction and lacquered oak frame as their namesake wooden pavilion, which used to stand in the city’s Frederiksberg district before it was replaced by a brick structure.

As with the rest of the Betty collection, which includes the TK1 chair and the TK4 and TK5 benches, the supportive webbing that is usually concealed underneath the upholstery is instead left exposed.

Described by the designers Jakob Thao and Sami Kallio as one of the “most overlooked” design elements, these straps are made from hand-woven, natural linen fibres and are available in either a natural or dyed black colour.

“The duo’s fascination for materials and methods has seen them emerge at the forefront of contemporary furniture design,” said &tradition founder and CEO Martin Kornbek Hansen.

“Together, they are revitalizing the Nordic narrative by applying classic craftsmanship techniques in new expressions.”

The stool’s light oak frames can either be left unlacquered or finished in black, maroon or a deep blue called Twilight.

Alongside the new product launches, the classic TK1 chair is now also available in its natural oak finish, while the two benches are available in all-black.
